Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance launched at Rs 3.3 Crore

The arrival of the Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance marks the debut of the most potent S-Class in our region, with a price tag of Rs 3.3 crore (ex-showroom). Available exclusively in a single 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant, this model includes cutting-edge plug-in hybrid technology along with a powerful 4-liter twin-turbo V8 petrol engine.

Here's how it distinguishes itself from the standard S-Class and the features it brings to the table -

1. Exterior Design

While Mercedes hasn’t changed the fundamental shape of this performance variant of the S-Class, it does incorporate AMG-specific emphasizing for a more athletic aesthetic. At the front, it showcases an AMG-specific grille with the ‘Mercedes-Benz’ logo placed at the center. Additionally, the design of the front bumper has been updated to include large air inlets, enhancing aerodynamic performance.

In terms of profile, the AMG S 63 E Performance maintains the familiar silhouette of the S-Class sedan. However, it stands out with its blacked-out 21-inch AMG-spec forged wheels with red-painted brake calipers, providing it a more dynamic appearance. Moving to the rear, the only modification from the standard S-Class is the inclusion of a sporty rear diffuser, integrating dual trapezoidal tailpipes on either side.

2. Interior Updates and Features

Upon entering, your attention will be drawn to the dashboard design, similar to the S-Class yet raised with carbon fiber inserts and a distinctive AMG dual-spoke steering wheel. The performance variant of the S-Class includes all-black Nappa leather seat upholstery.

In terms of features, the AMG S 63 E Performance offers amenities like a 12.8-inch MBUX infotainment system equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, alongside a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display. The driver’s display has received enhancements, now including AMG ‘Race’ and ‘Supersport’ style menus that showcase hybrid-specific temperatures, or a setup menu indicating the current setting for suspension or transmission.

Included in its range of features are 64-color ambient lighting, 4-zone climate control, and a comprehensive safety package comprising advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) like lane keep assist and automatic emergency braking.

3. Performance Updates

The AMG S 63 E Performance derives its power from a 4-liter twin-turbo V8 petrol engine combined with plug-in hybrid technology. This configuration generates an impressive output of 802 PS and 1430 Nm, distributed to all four wheels through a 9-speed automatic transmission. With this setup, the performance sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in just 3.3 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 250 kmph.

To power the electric motor in this hybrid configuration, the AMG S 63 Performance includes a 13.1 kWh battery pack which enables the sedan to operate in pure EV mode, providing a range of up to 33 km.

4. Additional Mechanical Enhancements

The AMG S 63 E Performance contains AMG Ride Control + technology, including an air suspension system with adaptive adjustable damping that adjusts according to the chosen driving mode. It incorporates active roll stabilization to minimize lateral body movements during cornering and enhance steering precision. Mercedes has also provided the sedan with rear-axle steering, which operates at a steering angle of 3 degrees, ensuring maneuverability in tight spaces and improving dynamics in fast corners.

5. Competitors

The Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance represents a performance-focused variant of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, competing directly with rivals such as the BMW 7 Series and Audi A8 L. It also serves as a more luxurious alternative to models like the AMG GT63 S E Performance and Porsche Panamera.
